3 Meta Ads mistakes burning your budget.
Most ad budgets aren’t wasted by one big mistake. They leak away through a few small ones that nobody notices, because everything still looks busy. These are the three I’d check first.
1. Sending ads to the wrong place
A homepage is built for everyone, so it persuades no one in particular. Someone who clicks an ad arrived with one specific promise in mind. Send them to a page that keeps that promise: one offer, one action, nothing else to click.
Check: if someone saw only the page, would they know why they’re there?
2. Tracking that’s missing or doubled
Meta can only improve your results if it knows who took action. That depends on events firing correctly: someone viewed a product, started checkout, bought. Two things go wrong all the time: events that don’t fire at all, and events that fire twice. Doubled events make your numbers look better than they are and quietly mislead the ad system.
Before you spend a dollar, click through your own funnel with a pixel checker open. Every step should fire once.
3. Optimising for clicks instead of results
Meta delivers what you ask it to chase. Ask for clicks and it finds people who click, which isn’t the same as people who buy. Where you can, optimise for the action that matters: a lead, a checkout or a purchase. If you don’t have enough of those yet, pick the closest meaningful step and move up as the data builds.
A quick pre-launch checklist
- The landing page matches the ad and has one clear action.
- Every key event fires once: page view, product view, checkout and purchase.
- You know which event the campaign is optimising for, and why.
- You’ve decided in advance when you’ll judge results, instead of changing everything after day one.
